Surf Telecoms, a leading provider of telecommunications products
and services in the South West of England and Wales, today announced
a £2.13 million investment in its network serving the region.
Work on Optical Broadband Service-enabling infrastructure from
Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSX: NT] will start immediately with the
aim of boosting capacity and providing carriers, mobile operators,
systems integrators and large corporate and public sector customers
with competitively priced, scalable bandwidth.
Steve Blew, Sales & Marketing Director for Surf Telecoms,
says,
" Steady growth in bandwidth demand from consumers and business
plus the fact that the South West is a major conduit for data between
the US and the UK means that we need the best possible technology
and services to support regional customers as we move forward."
The new network is set for completion in October and will link
up with Surf’s existing infrastructure in South Wales,
providing a reliable and sturdy network to accommodate further
increases in demand.
Peter Newcombe, president, Optical Networks, Nortel Networks
Europe, Middle East and Africa said, "With the ability to
offer next generation broadband services like Ethernet, storage
and managed wavelength services to its customers, Surf Telecoms
is increasing its competitive stance in the UK market. Nortel
Networks is working closely with Surf Telecoms to bring these
services to market and, ultimately, grow their business."
Welcoming the announcement, Fabian King, head of Regional ICT
at the South West Regional Development Agency (SWERDA) said,
" It is always encouraging to see large corporations based
in South West England investing in our region with an eye to the
future. Surf Telecoms should be congratulated for doing this and
in particular for safeguarding our future by pioneering the development
of advanced telecommunications in South West England. It is initiatives
like this that underpin our future." |
