SWERN CASE STUDY
Connecting Education and Research in
the South West of England
Surf Telecoms provides quality connectivity for the regional
education and research metropolitan area network, SWERN
(South West England Regional Network). This relationship
enables Surf to service the requirements of a growing network
of users. Originally formed as SWAN (South West Academic
Network) in 1997, the network was established to
meet the requirements of the University of Plymouth;
the network has since expanded to incorporate the Universities
of Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol, Bath and the West of England
and around 50 other higher and further education
colleges, research and associated institutions and in total some
450,000 users.
Surf Telecoms provides around 50% of core capacity for this
network. As part of a commitment to providing the highest quality
infrastructure and services, since 1997 Surf’s technology
supplied has evolved from conventional leased lines to state
of the art Gigabit Ethernet.
Ian Sugden, Business Manager at SWERN comments:
“The relationship
with Surf Telecoms has enabled SWERN to tap-into quality
technology to supply our needs and exceed our requirement.
Surf has provided a highly stable and consistent service, essential
for business, academic, research, teaching and learning activity. We
have found Surf to be extremely versatile, responsive and
willing to work with us to accommodate our current and future
requirements.” |
